The District Horticulture Office Kurukshetra is working for promotion of horticulture activities in the district as the fruit plantation, vegetable cultivation, Mushroom, Floriculture has a great significance in supplementing income and economic growth of the area, as around 90% of area is under cultivation. Moreover the development of horticulture activities have become more relevant when the area needs diversification from traditional wheat-paddy crop rotation to check the falling ground water level. The main activities of the department are highlighted here below:-

 

 

Production & area under fruit

Total Area developed under various fruit orchard is 910 hect., out of which 370 hect Mango, 160 guava, 247 hect Peach, Pea, Plum, 14 hect in Litchi, 37 hect Ber and 119 hect. Is under other species. In the year 1999-2000 Total production of the fruit during the year is 10,067 Tonnes Sardar Kuldeep Singh Bajwa, resident of village Bhor siadan who is one of the most progressive farmers, successfully growing the papaya orchard with moderen technique at large scale.

 

Production and Area under vegetable crops

During the year 1999-2000 total area under various vegetable crops was 2935 hect. and the production was 40570 Tones. The major vegetable crop of this area is potato, which was grown in 5298 hect land and the production remained at 99337 Tones.

Five hundred vegetable mini kits have been distributed free of cost among the farmers to popularise vegetable crops. It is worth mentioning here that Sardar Joginder Singh resident of Dera Amin of this district was honored by the Govt. of Haryana for the growing tomato crop with new technique.

 

Production and Area under flower

In the year 1999-2000 Area under flower was 61.4 hect and production 90 Tonnes. The main floriculture crop of the Area is Marigold, Gladiolus, Lillilium, Jerbera etc. Ten demonstration plots were laid out at farmers field by District Horticulture Office.

 

Mushroom Cultivation

The mushroom cultivation has come up as most income yielding profession in recent years in this district which is only the result of joint efforts of District Horticulture Office, Krishi Vigyan Kendra and DRDA. It is worth mentioning here that in 1988 there was only one or two small unit in mushroom cultivation whereas now 18000 Trays of Mushroom are laid during the year 1999-2000 and production remained at 75.5 Tonnes.

 

Production and Area under spices

Area under spices in the year 1999-2000 is 95 hect. and production was 209 tonnes. The department of Horticulture distributed 400 mini kits to the farmer at 50% subsidy.

In the year 1999-2000 the area under drip irrigation system established 10.5 hect at the subsidy of 70-90%. The strawberry cultivation with the help of drip irrigation is about 10.5 acre and obtained 750 Qtl. production.

Three Govt. garden and nurseries is situated in this distt. Ratgal, Ramnagar and Ladwa. The production of good quality grafted plants 34066 and seedling 25962 in the year 1999-2000.Total Income from the nurseries deposited 11.10 lacs to Govt Head.
