In Kurukshetra District, there are Reserve Forest of Ramgarh, Seonsar, Bakhli, Barason and Helwa. Helwa has also been declared as Wildlife Sanctuary Area. The total area of the Sanctuary is 3971.17 Acres. In the wildlife Sanctuary, there are large number of Neel Gais, wild boars, Hog Deers.
HARYANA COMMUNITY FORESTRY PROJECT
Haryana Community Forestry Project has become operational in Kurukshetra District from November 30,1998. This project will continue up to June 30, 2008. The total cost of the Project is estimated at Rs. 1414.7 Million out of which European Commission has agreed to grant Rs. 1095.1 Million. The project is being implemented in Ten districts of Haryana and will cover 300 villages. Kurukshetra is one of the districts where the project is being implemented.
The overall objective of the project is to build up the capacity of rural communities to improve the natural environment and maintain land fertility through sustainable management of natural resources. This work will be undertaken in a participatory manner with the co-operation of the local villagers and is expected to result in increased wood production, improved productivity of common and private lands and greater involvement of project stakeholders, including women, in planning and management of Common Property Resources (CPRs). The objectives are proposed to be achieved through its component like development of Village Wood Lots on village common lands, creation of Tree Grooves, raising of high yielding trees on farm-lands and development of Kitchen Gardens. A Hi-tech nursery with Mist Chamber is being developed in Sonti Reserve Forest, to raise high yielding and disease resistant clonal plants for the benefit of stakeholders.
Van Chetna Kendra
will be built in villages where the project is being implemented. An incentive money of Rs. 30000/- is to be given for maintenance of Village Wood Lot plantations and Rs. 10000/- is being spent on entry point activities in the Village. A village resource development committee is being constituted in every village to look after the resources and two link workers are also being engaged to maintain liaison between the villagers and the Forest department.
Kurukshetra Production Division
Kurukshetra Production Division, having jurisdiction over Kurukshetra, Ambala and Kaithal Revenue Districts, is engaged in harvesting of dead, dry and green fallen trees of various species from the strips of rail, roads and canals of these districts. About 18 thousand Cubic meter of standing volume is being felled by this division annually by incurring an expenditure of about 50 Lacs of rupees. The Forest Produce, thus harvested is brought to Forest Depots from where it is auctioned. The revenue generated during the year 1999-2000 was Rs, 2.31 Crores. Pulp wood and fuel wood of Eucalyptus and Kiker trees is also being supplied / sold to Government Departments and wood based Industries.
Haryana Forest Development Corporation
Haryana Forest Development Corporation, has its Regional office at Kurukshetra. This unit is providing a Minimum Support Price to the farmers involved in Agro Forestry.
